This research aims to present the main elements of the historical process of establishment of the American Accounting Research Tradition of the Present (AARTP) and to discuss if this process represents a trajectory of intellectual progress. The identification of the Research Tradition model developed in this thesis was grounded on the perspective of the scientific progress of Laudan (2011), and on the approach to the subjective temporality embodied by the Annalles historiographical school. Thus, in this investigation, AARTP represents the set of hypotheses contained in articles considered relevant among members of the intellectual accounting community, until the year 2019. The model highlights that the establishment of a research tradition begins with the context of the cognitive search, in which, extraordinary researchers structure the intellectual field (exploration stage) and introduce conceptual and anomalous problems (breakthrough stage). If successful, then, the community engage in the cognitive context of acceptance (incremental stage), when the researchers consider the adequate solution for the problems, the discipline acts on solved problems. If this trajectory represents an increase in the number of problems solved for the area, then it represents intellectual progress. In order to achieve the goals of this investigation, a qualitative approach was employed. Initially, the research database was constructed from 9 bibliometric articles that indicated the accounting publications most cited by accounting researchers. There were identified 129 articles, from the exploratory analysis. It became evident that 16 articles were stressed as outliers, which were cited above the average sample standard, until 2019. The problems contained in those works were categorized as conceptual, anomalous, and solved, according to Laudan (2011) taxonomy. The research results have indicated that the AARTP chronological temporality is between 1968 and 2005. The AARTP subjective time boundary is expressed by the following fundamental hypotheses: i) Accounting is useful to its users; ii) there is informational asymmetry; iii) managers are opportunistic; iv) managers influence the process of preparing accounting standards; v) managers believe that they can influence the perception of users of accounting information. The development of those hypotheses started with the structural actions of Sidney Davidson, Nicholas Dopuch, and Charles Horngren (JAR foundation, incentive to interdisciplinary research, dissemination of innovative works). Those actions made it possible for Ray Ball, Philip Brown, Willian H. Beaver, Ross L. Watts and Jerold L. Zimmerman to question the central hypothesis of the prevailing tradition at that time: accounting is not useful to its users. Therefore, a more efficient accounting measurement standard must be developed. The synthesis of the conceptual and anomalous questions elaborated by these researchers were: What are the determinants of the supply and demand of the financial statements? The approach for solving this issue came from the Market Efficiency Hypothesis and, later, from the Information Economy theory. The members of the academic accounting community accepted the solutions presented by the group as adequate and they started the phase of incremental advances, in which the deepening of the themes related to earnings management was observed. Therefore, it was verified that the establishment of TPCEP was characterized as a trajectory of intellectual progress, once conceptual and anomalous problems were transformed into solved problems.
