Abstract in English
Despite the increase in Brazilian fresh fruit exports, Brazil is still not among the world's largest exporters. Thus, the present investigation seeks to investigate the role of Ménard's meso-institutions as facilitators or limitations of this advancement. The main objective is to discuss the agro-industrial systems (SAGs) that export mango, melon and grapes in the light of meso-institutions. Exploratory research was carried out with semistructured questions with representatives from each SAG, in addition to intermediary organizations, and content analysis was used, with the help of a word cloud, to interpret the results. It is noteworthy that the studied mango, melon and grape SAGs have production focused on the Northeast and have different agent profiles and levels of production scale and, therefore, the importance of their comparisons. As a result, it was noted that the three export chains had to internalize almost all functions that could be performed by meso-institutions (translation, implementation and monitoring) and there was no great difficulty for large companies, but there were challenges for small ones, which could be solved, in part, by the support of large companies or by joining cooperatives. The implementation function was the one that registered the least support from meso-institutions, thus demonstrating that it is only the responsibility of the exporting company. Furthermore, the different levels of production scale may have led to less dependence on the melon chain by meso-institutions, while for grapes, there was greater dependence. For a future agenda, the number of agents interviewed can be increased; apply a quantitative methodology; and expand the study to other fruits exported by Brazil, since this research was based on those of greater economic relevance, and there may be a different scenario for other fruit profiles.
