The Brazilian Cerrado is the most biodiverse savanna on the planet, the second largest biome in Brazil and the second most threatened. The conservation, sustainable use and restoration of the Cerrado are enormous challenges, given the fast change of their native ecosystems by agriculture, the difficulties in maintaining the natural disturbance regimes necessaries to maintain the diversity and ecological processes typical of savanna vegetation, and gaps of knowledge on the restoration of non-forest ecosystems in Brazil. Many of these conservationist issues go through the management of extensive cattle ranching, the predominant land use in the biome, and the control of exotic African grasses, introduced as forages, that quickly became the main invasive plants in the Cerrado. The objective of this work is to evaluate the ecological and financial viability of the management of cattle for the restoration of the cerrado. We start from the premise that cattle grazing can favor the regeneration of native species while providing income to rural producers, reducing restoration costs and greatly expanding the operational capacity of rural producers to restore large areas of native vegetation in the biome. We established a controlled experiment in Rosário Oeste-MT, in an area that in the past was a savanna-forest, in a pasture occupied by Urochloa decumbens (Stapf) R.D.Webster and other pasture occupied by Andropogon gayanus Kunth. We established an experiment with 22, factorial design, with two treatments (cattle grazing and control of exotic grass using glifosate) and two levels (with and without cattle grazing and chemical control of exotic grass). All cattle ranching costs and revenues in the region and the costs for applying the mentioned treatments were also raised. 5 years after, the pasture without cattle grazing continues to show 100% coverage with exotic grasses. In the pasture of U. decumbens, grazing, especially when combined with the chemical control of exotic grasses, negatively interfered basal area growth and tree species cover; however, it reduced the coverage with exotic grasses and increased abundance and coverage with shrub, sub-shrub, herbaceous and native grass species. In the pasture of A. gayanus, the effects of grazing were similar, but there was no interference in basal area growth and tree species cover. The cattle ranching has favored the formation of an intermediate stage of regeneration with greater diversification of native herbs, shrubs, sub-shrubs and grasses. While grazing restriction has favored the growth of sparse trees on an area dominated with exotic grasses. From a financial, cattle grazing without the control of exotic grasses was the only profitable treatment, with a net present value of R$ 2,374.68 in five years. Thus the cattle ranching without cultivating the pasture becomes a viable alternative ecologically and financially for the sustainable use and restoration of the cerrado.
