For many years, the dynamics between forest and water have been studied, due to the fundamental role attributed to the forest in relation to its capacity for water regulation. However, the high water consumption of the forest during its development leads to a decrease in water resources in a given area, thus there is a tradeoff between water availability and regulation. In the face of the deterioration of forest areas in the world, a global movement of forest restoration has been generated, aiming to recover the functions of the forest and guarantee the provision of essential ecosystem services for the well-being of human beings. However, despite the execution of several restoration projects, little is known about the long-term hydrological effect of forest restoration effect at the catchment. Given this context, the general objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the development of forest restoration on the water regime of a watershed, in order to understand the dynamics of the trade-off between water supply and water regulation. For this purpose, using an experimental area with information on the physical environment and hydrological and meteorological monitoring, a physically distributed hydrological model was calibrated and validated, through which it was possible to simulate scenarios at different ages of forest restoration. The parameterization of the model was based on the characteristics of an experimental catchment of 0.72 km2 in the process of forest restoration, located in the state of São Paulo - Brazil. After the hydrological model was calibrated and validated (R2 of 0.67 and 0.87), the forest development scenarios were defined, considering restorations with 5, 15, and 30 years of age. These scenarios were established by changing physical-hydric parameters considered as decision criteria and that represent the structural variations of the restored forest. Additionally, scenarios of possible trajectories of restoration development were simulated under premises of intensity of use in the area or forest management. The analysis of the simulated scenarios was performed according to the hydrological services of availability and water regulation, based on hydrological indicators of maximum flow rate (Q5), minimum flow rate (Q95), average flow rate (Q50), annual flow, Flashness index (IF) and baseflow index (BFI). The tested hypotheses were that the age development of forest restoration would decrease the water supply in the catchment while there would be an increase in the water regulation, allowing to define the age at which the tradeoff between the two services occurs. The results effectively showed a tendency to decrease the streamflow and minimum flow with the development of the forest, which representing an affectation on the water availability of the catchment, with the increase in the age of the forest. There was also an improvement in the water regulation of the catchment reflected in the reduction of peak flows and the flashness. However, 30 years was not enough time for the restoration to return from the initial water consumption, therefore, it was not possible to define the age at which the tradeoff between water availability and regulation occurs. It was also observed that forest management alternatives such as thinning can be a potential alternative in reducing the water consumption of the restored forest without compromising its ability to regulate flows in the watershed.
