LiDAR multiespectral

Abstract in English
Mapping tree species in the urban environment can be an important tool for the urban forest management. The different tree species have peculiar characteristics of canopy shape and density, as well as distinct leaf shape and structure. These geometric data of the crown and leaves of different tree species from the LiDAR cloud, together with spectral reflectance data obtained by other remote sensing sources can be explored aiming at the taxonomic classification of tree individuals. In- depth analysis of the data available from LiDAR can reveal new ways of classifying, detecting and identifying tree individuals. In this context, this thesis aims to assess different methods for mapping tree species in an urban environment, based on the individual segmentation of tree crown and the use of different sensors. The work consists of three chapters: 1) A systematic review on mapping urban tree species or types of trees; 2) assessment of RGB images from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for mapping urban tree species; 3) multispectral LiDAR sensor as a single source of data for classifying urban tree species. The work demonstrates two possible ways of mapping tree species in the urban environment, one using a low cost method, but with more limitations, and a second with a multispectral LiDAR sensor high operational at a more expensive budget, however achieving better results, obtaining a Kappa index of up to 0.9.
