Ratoon stunting disease
Abstract in English
Ratoon stunting disease (RS) is a sugarcane disease whose causative agent is a pathogenic bacterium called Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli. The pathogen establishes and colonizes xylem vascular bundles and can also be found in leaf sheath and mesophyll cells throughout the disease development in the plant. The disease not have specific symptoms, the main damage occurs in yield, where diseased plants have less tillers formation and growth. The impact of the disease on the field is directly associated with the growth of bacterial titers, which triggers physiological changes in the plant. However, the disease is still an enigma, lacking clarification as to how the disease affects sugarcane productivity or the disease induces water deficit or whether the symptoms of the disease are associated with nutritional imbalance in the plant. In this thesis, we seek to answer these hypotheses, seeking to better understand the disease from the study of plant physiology. Throughout the chapters studied, we found in chapter 1 that the colonization of the bacteria does not lead the plants to the state of water deficit. In chapter 2 we show that RS affects sugarcane productivity by altering its development and carbon partitioning in the plant. The sugarcane with high Lxx titers exhibited accumulated more sugar in the main stalk in function of the lower formation sinks due to the lower formation of tillers. In Chapter 3, we show that RS symptoms are also associated with a nutritional imbalance in the plant. Plants with RS showed an increase in sulfur (S), magnesium and calcium absorption. Increased absorption of S was accompanied by lower absorption of molybdenum from the root. Thus, symptoms of RS may be associated with increased absorption of S leading to molybdenum deficiency throughout plant development. Therefore, from this investigation, it was found that RS increases the water demand in the plant. In addition, the growth of bacterial titer in sugarcane alters the carbon partitioning and nutritional status of the plant.
