One of the threats to the Cerrado vegetation has been the cultivation and invasion of exotic species, for example, Pinus sp., as there are few species of the herbaceous and shrub layer are able to survive the soil management for planting and, to remain in the understory due to the pine needles layer and the low light input resulting from the canopy closure. For the present study, the palm Allagoptera campestris was chosen, which occurs in three distinct areas of the Santa Bárbara Ecological Station, located in Águas de Santa Bárbara, São Paulo, that is, in an understory of Pinus sp. (SBP), in a regenerating Cerrado area (CER) after removal of Pinus sp. (in 2012) and subsequent burning of the remaining material (in 2014) and in an area of Cerrado where there was no planting of Pinus sp. The research aimed to answer the following questions: a) Do the morphoanatomical, physiological, and chemical characteristics of organs vegetative organs of A. campestris differ in the three areas? b) Do the individuals in the three areas respond similarly to the shallow cut of the aerial part? c) Could the rhizome fragmentation during soil preparation for planting Pinus have favored the occurrence of A. campestris in the understory? To answer the questions, three plants were collected in each of the three areas with the aid of a backhoe. Morphometric data of vegetative organs were collected. Leaf samples were processed with the usual techniques for light microscopy (ML) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Physiological analyzes of the leaf and chemical analyzes of the rhizome were also performed. After the shallow cut of the aerial part of 10 other plants in each area, analyzes were carried out every two months during the period of one year. The morphoanatomical, physiological and chemical characteristics of the plants differed between areas. The SBP leaves showed greater length than in the other two areas and lower values of total leaf blade thickness, expansion tissue thickness, epicuticular wax deposition, and stomatal index. The SBP plants also showed the lowest values of net CO2 assimilation, in contrast, in the CER plants the highest values were observed. However, the total carbohydrate content is higher in SBP plants. Plants at CEN showed higher concentrations of total phenolics than plants growing in areas with the interference of Pinus sp. Response to shallow cut of the aerial part differed between areas. However, in each area, after one year, the plants presented similar values of the parameters analyzed before the shallow cut of the aerial part was carried out. As the plants of A. campestris were all acaulescent with leaves in close proximity or at ground level, the axillary buds were all concentrated in the proximal portion of the rhizome protected by the leaf sheaths. No axillary buds were found along the rhizome, indicating that its fragmentation would hardly allow propagation favoring the occurrence of the species in the SBP.
