Abstract in English
The replacement of ground corn grain by reconstituted corn grain silage can help in better and earlier rumen development. However, as it is a highly fermentable starch source, it can cause metabolic disorders, such as acidosis, negatively impacting intake and animal performance. Thirty-six newborn Holstein calves were used, distributed in a randomized block design, considering sex, birth weight (34,844 ± 1.32 kg) and birth data. The animals were distributed in two treatments: 1. CON: concentrate based on corn ground grain, soybean meal, soy husk and premix of minerals and vitamins; and 2. RCGS: concentrate with the same composition but with replacement of ground corn by reconstituted corn silage. The experiment lasted 70d, and the animals were fed 6L/d of whole milk and starter. A transition period to the eighth week was considered, in which weaning and ad libitum hay supply for both treatments began. Weight gain and metabolic indicators of intermediate metabolism were collected weekly. Ruminal fluid was collected at 8 and 10 weeks of age. After completing 70 days of life, animals from the last blocks (5 animals per treatment) were slaughtered for morphological analysis of the rumen. Feed intake was measured daily. The replacement by grain silage promoted greater feed efficiency during the pre-weaning period. The dry matter intake (g) of concentrate was higher for animals fed the control diet in the transition period. The control diet promoted higher isovaleric and isobutyric acids and ammonia nitrogen concentrations. Animals at the control diet had higher fecal scores throughout the experimental period. Regarding blood parameters, the control diet promoted the highest concentration of total protein, while the silage diet promoted the highest plasma glucose concentration. The replacement of ground grain corn by reconstituted grain corn silage was efficient during the preweaning period; however, its use in the transition period proved to be capable of general metabolic disorders, such as acidosis and decreased intake.
