Keywords in Portuguese

Phytophthora cinnamomi
Desenvolvimento inicial
Eficiência produtiva

Performance of commercial cultivar seedlings as rootstocks for 'Hass' avocado trees

Production efficiency
Abstract in English
Avocado production has grown in Brazil in the last years, driven by the potential growth of consumption on the domestic market and the possibility of exporting the fruit. However, some fundamental issues continue to limit the expansion of the crop in the country, such as the lack of specific legislation on seedling production and the soil-borne pathogen Phytophtora cinnamomi Rands. The lack of legislation led some nurseries and growers to use the seeds of commercial cultivars such as 'Fortuna', 'Margarida', 'Quintal' and 'Hass', as well as the seeds of ungrafted plants ('Francos') as rootstocks. However, there is little information known about how these genetic materials influence the development of the plants in the nursery, in the field and when exposed to the pathogen. Thinking of this, the aim of this study was to understand how the seedlings of these genetic materials influence the formation of 'Hass' avocado trees under nursery conditions, and also the development of the plants in the field and in nursery conditions, how the seedlings respond to the inoculation with Phytophtora cinnamomi. Seedlings of 'Quintal' were promising for anticipating the production of 'Hass' avocado seedlings, while the use of 'Margarida' as a rootstock resulted in the formation of better quality seedlings. The 'Fortuna' seedlings developed slightly better than the others, even when the pathogen was present. In the field, 'Fortuna' seedlings had larger canopies and 'Franco' seedlings had higher production efficiency but smaller fruits. Finally, similarities and differences were observed between the rootstocks assessed, and these should be used in favour of Brazilian avocado production.
