Abstract in English
The objective of this work was to evaluate the quality of rice seeds using X-ray, multispectral and chlorophyll fluorescence image analysis techniques and to relate this information with the physiological quality of seeds and the photosynthetic efficiency of seedlings; for this, six rice seed lots of the cultivar BRS Catiana were used. Two experiments were performed: 1) relations between X-ray, multispectral and chlorophyll fluorescence images with the physiological quality of seeds; 2) relations between X-ray, multispectral and chlorophyll fluorescence images with the photosynthetic efficiency of seedlings. In the first experiment, the seeds were identified and enumerated, after that, radiographic images were obtained and then processed using ImageJ software to obtain the free space (area between endosperm + embryo and glumes). Subsequently, multispectral images and chlorophyll fluorescence images were acquired using VideometerLab® equipment; then, chlorophyll fluorescence of chlorophyll a images were taken using SeedReporter® equipment. After taking all images, with the purpose of evaluating the performance of the seeds under analysis, a computerized seedling analysis was performed using SVIS® software. Finally, germination and vigor tests were performed with the seeds under analysis of the six lots. In the second experiment, X-ray images (to obtain the free space), multispectral images, and chlorophyll fluorescence images were acquired. After obtaining the images, the seeds, previously identified (numbered), were placed to germinate in polyethylene cups with 250 mL capacity, using a mixture of soil and sand as substrate; at seven, nine and eleven days after seedling emergence, photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) and chlorophyll fluorescence were evaluated. It was concluded that rice seeds with internal free space equal to or greater than 18.68% either do not germinate or result in abnormal seedlings. Rice seeds that do not germinate or originate abnormal seedlings show higher reflectance in the spectral bands of wavelengths from 590 nm to 780 nm (41.46% to 64.21%) and in the 970 nm band (75.65%). Rice seeds that do not germinate or result in abnormal seedlings show chlorophyll fluorescence values of 40.58 and 112.92, respectively, at excitation/emission energies of 630/700 nm and 645/700 nm. The greater photosynthetic efficiency of rice seedlings is directly related to the reflectance from 365 nm to 780 nm spectral bands of the seeds.
