Abstract in English
The soybean production chain is one of the most relevant economic activities in Brazil, consolidated as the main component of the national export basket in the first decade of the 21st century, with the commodities boom. Thus, and highlighting the importance of logistics for the segment in promoting competitiveness and environmental impacts, the objective of this work is to validate the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis, relationship between environmental degradation and income, for the transportation of soy in Brazil in the period of 2002, after China’s entry into the World Trade Organization, until 2017. For this, estimations were made using data in a fixed effects panel and dynamic models of panel data estimated by the GMM system, having as a dependent variable the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from soy transportation, elaborated through the determination of transport flows through a mathematical model to minimize costs and CO2 emission factors for transport modes. The results allow the validation of the “N” shaped Environmental Kuznets Curve in transport, showing that the economic performance is insufficient to mitigate emissions in the long term and that the increase in production is a determining factor for its growth. This makes it possible to indicate that increases in investment in intermodal transport and the incorporation of new technologies less dependent on fossil fuels in road transport must be priorities in the formulation of public policies, aiming at increasing the productivity of transport operations and reducing environmental damage.
