Transmissão de preços

Price transmission asymmetry: two essays on Brazilian agribusiness chains

Abstract in English
In this study, the transmission of prices between links in the chain of two agricultural products was examined: soybean (including bran and oil) and fresh tomato. The products of the soy complex are sold both in the domestic and foreign markets, given the possibility of storage. In contrast, fresh tomatoes, which have a short post-harvest life, are only sold on the domestic market. Although they have different characteristics, they stand out in the economy of their respective segments: grains and vegetables. As with all agricultural products, they present variations in the quantity and quality offered over time, which is reflected in prices, which are also influenced by supply and demand shifters. The tomato and soybean marketing chains involve several links, and price adjustments between them can occur in different magnitudes and at different times. Therefore, the objective of the study was to analyze the behavior of price transmission between successive links in the chains of the mentioned cultures. The NARDL approach by Shin, Yu and Greenwood-Nimmo (2014) was used to verify the presence of short-term and long-term asymmetry. Daily price data series were used in both cases. For the soy complex, the results of the NRDL test indicate, in general, rapid transmission of shocks between links in the chain, explained by the dynamics with which information is propagated from the Chicago Stock Exchange to the producer. Despite this, positive ATP (Price Transmission Asymmetry) was observed between some links. In the case of soybeans, between the Chicago price and FOB price, between the Paranaguá Indicator and the lot price of some Brazilian regions, and in the case of soybean meal, between the Chicago price and the FOB price in the Brazil. Negative ATP was observed in the case of soybean oil, between the Chicago price and the FOB price in Brazil. For fresh tomato, a symmetrical response and rapid transmission of shocks were observed for most of the relationships studied. Only in the case of tomato 3A, of higher quality, the presence of negative ATP was observed between the market levels.
