Abstract in English
The main objective of this study is to analyze in detail the challenges and economic viability of implementing endowments in Brazil. The methodology adopted for this thesis was discourse analysis, given that institutions are built primarily from texts, and then are made through practical actions. In order to capture primary data, interviews were conducted and documents were reviewed, such as founding statutes, meeting minutes and other organizational and financial documents. There are three main results: 1. There is a viable legal basis, but one that can still be improved for the legal status of endowments, in particular tax exemptions and immunities. 2. The organizational structure of an endowment can be relatively simple in the initial stages, and complex when fully established, with emphasis on the modern governance adopted by Brazilian endowments. 3. The management of endowments in Brazil is carried out by professionals with high technical competence, however, adjusting to the peculiar Brazilian macroeconomic reality. In summary, there are bases for the viability of endowments in Brazil. Future studies are recommended to understand the potential of this nascent endowment industry in Brazil.
