Abstract in English
This study aimed to investigate the reliability and validity of the SmartPaddle (SP) compared with the traditional strain-gauge (SG) measurements in a 30-s all-out arms-only tethered swimming test (30TS). Twelve recreational young-adult swimmers performed two 30TS tests 24 hours apart, and the propulsive forces were collected simultaneously by both devices during the assessments. In the validity analysis (SG × SP), significantly higher values were found for SG for peak force, mean force, and impulse (p ≤ 0.001, d ≥ 2.33). Strong significant correlations were found to both peak and mean forces (r ≥ 0.84), but not to impulse (r = 0.31). In the reliability analysis (test × retest), no statistical differences were found in any variables (p ≥ 0.39). High levels of reliability were found to peak force (ICC = 0.96, TE = 2.52 N), mean force (ICC = 0.95, TE = 1.35 N), and impulse (ICC = 0.94, TE = 3.24 N). The concordance analysis showed systematic errors close to zero in all variables (-0.41 to 0.15 N). In conclusion, the propulsive force measured by the SP was strongly correlated with the SG during a 30TS, and the high levels of reliability indicate that this device can be used to assess the propulsive force during real conditions of training and competition.
