Strength training has been widely practiced due to its significant contributions to the quality of life. Facing imposed limitations by hospitalizations/rehabilitation, microgravity environment sojourn, and the struggle to access training centers, several proposes like the co-contraction training have been presented, providing accessibility on such circumstances. The co-contraction training rises as an alternative once it does not require equipment or gravity to be performed. This method relies on performing maximal voluntary co-contraction of an agonist and antagonist muscle group of a determined joint, permitting both muscle groups produce and receive mechanical resistance during the voluntary co-contraction. Even though previous studies tested this method only under supervision on participants with no training experience. Considering that training conditioning and training supervision affects directly on the strength training results, the present study sought to analyze the effect of co-contraction training over the peak of torque, thickness, and muscular recruitment of elbow flexors (EF) and extensors (EE), during the cessation of conventional strength training. We recruited twenty trained male adults (age 24.1±3.2 years; height 178.7±7.3 cm; bodyweight: 81.2±9.6 kg). During the research, all participants suspended their conventional strength training practices, adopting only the protocol proposed in our intervention. We randomly divided the sample into three groups: supervised training(n=8), non-supervised training(n=6), and the control group (n =6), which have had no strength training practice during the intervention period. We obtained EF and EE muscle thickness and peak of torque data through ultrasonography pictures and maximal isometric torque tests on an isokinetic device, respectively. For the myoelectric activity, we registered the muscular recruitment of the biceps brachii and triceps brachii long (TBLH) and short head (TBSH), simultaneously with the maximal isometric torque test. Once the intervention period was over, we repeated all the tests. The training protocol was applied for four weeks, three times a week, in which each session of training had eight sets of 10 repetitions each. Each rep was characterized by four seconds of co-contraction (maintain elbow at 90° of flexion) followed by four seconds of muscle relaxation. We provided a 90 seconds interval between sets. For participants involved in training groups, we provided the same training instructions previously to the intervention. The main difference was that the supervised group received the supervision of strength and conditioning professional during all training sessions, while the non-supervised group followed protocol at home with no supervision. To compare the results between groups and moments, we used two ways ANOVAs and Friedman tests. Our results point out no significant difference between groups and moments, nor the interaction between factors for none of the seven main observed variables. The percentage variation between moments (pre and post-intervention) for ST, NST and CG were, respectively: Peak of torque EF 2,7%, -2,6% e -7,7%, EE 4,1%, -4,3% e -7,5%; Muscular thickness: EF 4,7%, -3,5% e -7,7%, EE 1,6%, -1,9% e 1,1%; Myoelectric activity: BB 4,6%, 0,5% e -4,6%, TCSH 0%, -7,5% e -4,4%, TCLH 0,1%, -4,4% e -2,7%. Thus, the co-contraction training did not promote significant changes on assessed neuromuscular variables. On the other hand, is important to highlight that the ST participants have shown positive percentage variations on most of the observed variables at the end of the intervention, while the other two groups have shown negative percentage variations for some of the observed parameters.
