Com a coleção inicial originária do gabinete do Coronel Sertório, o Museu Paulista foi fundado em 1893 com o objetivo de estudar a história natural sulamericana, com ênfase às coleções naturais do Estado de São Paulo. Em convivência com esse acervo majoritário, havia uma representativa coleção numismática com aproximadamente duas mil peças. Apesar dessa presença no acervo, o museu só instaurou um gabinete numismático em 1946, durante a gestão do professor Sérgio Buarque de Holanda. Atualmente, com uma coleção estruturada e reconhecida mundialmente, a seção numismática do Museu Paulista da Universidade de São Paulo completa uma história de mais de 70 anos, com um acervo diversificado de mais de 25 mil peças, sendo o acervo de moedas e medalhas mais importante do Estado de São Paulo. Através de um breve panorama do surgimento da moeda e do colecionismo numismático durante os anos, e de um estudo mais aprofundado do colecionismo de moedas e medalhas nos museus europeus e nacionais, este trabalho busca entender o processo de musealização da coleção numismática do Museu Paulista, resgatando a história da formação desse acervo a partir da direção de Hermann von Ihering e os processos de aquisição durante sua gestão. Com base num revisionismo bibliográfico e em análises de documentos primários, essa dissertação trabalhará a convivência, bastante comum nos séculos XVIII e XIX, dos acervos de história natural e numismática nos primeiros museus europeus e nacionais.

With the initial collection originating from Coronel Sertório, the Museu Paulista was founded in 1893 with the objective of studying South American natural history, with emphasis on the natural collections of the State of São Paulo. Coexistence with this majority collection, there was a substantial numismatic collection with approxi- mately two thousand pieces. Despite this presence in the collection, the museum on- ly opened a numismatic office in 1946, during the administration of Professor Sérgio Buarque de Holanda. Currently, with a structured and world-recognized collection, 9 the numismatic section of the Museu Paulista of the University of São Paulo com- pletes more than 70 years of history, with a diversified collection of more than 8 thou- sand pieces, including the most important coin and medal collection of the State of São Paulo. Through a brief overview of the rise of coin and numismatic collecting over the years, and a deeper study of coin and medal collection in European and national mu- seums, this work seeks to understand the musealization process of the Museu Pau- lista numismatic collection, rescuing the history of the formation of this collection un- der the direction of Hermann von Ihering. Based on bibliographic revision and analy- sis of primary documents, this dissertation will work on the coexistence, quite com- mon in the 18th and 19th centuries, of natural history and numismatic collections in the first European and national museums.
