Urban housing in the state of São Paulo
Abstract in English
This work is a study of urban residential architecture based on the collection of Private Works from the APHRP Public and Historical Archives of the city of Ribeirão Preto, SP, between the years 1910, the beginning of the collections existence, and 1933, the year in which the construction practice changed with regard to legislation, construction agents and materials used, with emphasis on the adoption of the Arthur Saboya Works Code for the city of Ribeirão Preto and the regulation of the practice of engineering and architecture across the country with the creation of professional boards. It surveys, systematizes and analyzes the projects approved by the Building Department, identifying the transformations concerning function, structure and design through the analysys of the construction project implementation, volumetric data, programs and design intentions in parallel to the zoning and development codes in force that occurred throughout such period. This study defends the hypothesis that the diversity of the architectural characteristics of urban housing in Ribeirão Preto at the beginning of the 20th century was linked to different local political, economic, social and cultural contexts and coexisted in a manner compatible with the architectural scenario of large capitals especially the capital of São Paulo with the emergence of new programs, changes in construction project implementation, innovations in the formal repertoire, and other characteristics that can be analyzed through the architectural designs of the project collection on file at the APHRP. This paper is based on theories contained in recent research conducted by Jorge Lody, local authors such as Adriana Capretz Silva, and on renowned authors, namely, Nabil Bonduki, Maria Cristina Wolff de Carvalho, Sylvia Ficher, Maria Cecília Naclério Homem, Carlos Lemos and Nestor Goulart Reis Filho, and, finally, on other authors that have contributed with their views on the international context like Clay Lancaster, Monique Eleb and Anne Debarre.
