A cidade de São Paulo passou por grandes transformações no início do século XX. Até meados do século XIX, era considerada pequena e com crescimento lento, conservando muito de sua feição colonial. A partir do final do XIX e principalmente no início do XX, passa a crescer de maneira bem mais expressiva, com aumento populacional e territorial, devido sobretudo à economia cafeeira, à intensa imigração e à industrialização. As mudanças foram perceptíveis nos diversos setores: economia, urbanização, cultura, artes e na sociedade de maneira geral, que parecia estar em êxtase por este crescimento acelerado. Nesse contexto, procurando equipará-la a outros grandes centros urbanos dos EUA e Europa, passa a surgir um discurso sobre a cidade que se pauta na exaltação de suas transformações como sinônimo de progresso e do paulista como conquistador de terras e riquezas, com o fortalecimento do mito bandeirista. No mesmo período ganham espaço as discussões sobre o modernismo nas artes, que entende esta cidade em ebulição como o espaço ideal para a celebração da modernidade e a exaltação da metrópole e seus signos, como a industrialização e a velocidade. Contribuindo para a criação da imagem de cidade efervescente, a Semana de 22 afirma a eleição de São Paulo como a centralidade do movimento. Contudo, a partir principalmente da década de 30, a cidade passa a apresentar de maneira mais evidente problemas decorrentes do crescimento acelerado e do seu ambiente social, tensionando a imagem que se buscava criar da cidade. Esta tese buscou compreender a construção do imaginário urbano da cidade de São Paulo a partir das representações da cidade presentes nos periódicos da época. Constituem as fontes primárias os periódicos técnicos nas áreas de Engenharia, Arquitetura e do Urbanismo e as revistas de Artes e Literatura, publicadas no período entre 1910 e 1930. Verifica-se como os projetos e escritos sobre a cidade de São Paulo nos campos da Literatura e dos estudos urbanos dialogam na construção desta imagem, seja ao celebrar os rumos da cidade, enfatizando sua modernização, seja ao criticar estes rumos, assinalando seus problemas urbanos.

The city of São Paulo went through large transformations in the beginning of the 20th century. Until the end of the 19th century, it was considered small and with a slow growth, preserving part of its colonial features. Starting from the end of the 19th century and mainly in the beginning of the 20th, it starts to grow in a more expressive way, with populational and territorial increase, mainly due to the coffee economy, the intense immigration and industrialization. The changes were perceptible in several sectors: economy, urbanization, culture, arts and more generally in the society, which appeared to be ecstatic with this accelerated growth. In this context, looking to place itself as a city in development and able to be compared with other large urban centers, like the European and American capitals, a discourse about the city starts to emerge, based on the exaltation of its transformations as a synonym of progress and the paulista as a land conqueror, with the strengthening of the bandeirista myth. In the same period, the discussions about modernism in the arts that understand this feverish city as the ideal space for the celebration of modernity and the exaltation of urbanity and its signs, like industrialization and speed. Contributing for the creation of an image of an effervescent city, the 1922 Modern Art Week affirms the election of São Paulo as the central point of the modernist movement. Yet, starting mainly from the 1930s, the city starts to show in a more evident way problems resulting of the accelerated growth, putting the image that was being created of the city under tension. This thesis tried to understand the construction of the urban imaginary of the city of São Paulo, starting from the city representations present in the period journals. The primary sources are the technical journals in the areas of engineering, architecture and urbanism, and the arts and literature periodicals, published between 1910 and 1930. We verify how the projects and writings about the city of São Paulo in the literature and urban fields dialog in the construction of this image, either as a celebration the city future paths, emphasizing its modernization, or criticizing these paths, indicating its urban problems.
