The Renaissance was a period marked largely by artistic, social, political, and economic changes, outlining the constitution of a new artistic language. The humanists played a great role in the transformations that sustained the ideological basis of the Renaissance movement, since they proposed a new reading of Christian civilization in which they infused a new consciousness linked to man, no longer to a supreme God and center of all and any measure of the universe. A culture in which order and freedom of the human spirit, of the rational and of nature predominated, in which art was inspired by classical models. The architects of the Renaissance, illuminating this prerogative, made the written text and the drawing important allies for their theoretical and practical conceptions; as well as for the diffusion of their ideas and projects. In this paper, the focus is on the classical treatise by Andrea Palladio, first published in 1570, verifying the importance of its contribution to foster some principles of architectural restoration theories. In I quattro libri della'Architettura, Palladio not only defines a general theory, but also establishes, in the light of his own path and that of his predecessors, the priority issues for the formation of an architect. These include looking (measuring and drawing) at the ruins and architecture of the past. The fourth book of the treatise, the most specific object of this research, is the collection and display, with texts and drawings, of the Roman temples he visited. By studying, observing, measuring and presenting with drawings the works of Classical Antiquity, Palladio perpetuates and spreads the interest of architects, archaeologists, historians and neoclassical artists for the works of Antiquity. At that moment, already in the 18th century, archeology emerges as a discipline, and Rome becomes an international center of studies and diffusion of ideas. Later, in the 19th century, with restoration emerging as a discipline and being practiced systematically, attention turns to archaeological restoration, since it is the first to emerge. Furthermore, this first restoration turned to Classical Architecture and began to conserve it based on scientific studies, excavations, graphic surveys, study of the site, anastomosis and distinction of materials. To establish this approach, this research will use the research methods of history, with emphasis on Architecture and Urbanism, justified by the fact that history is made of related times and periodicities, in which there are ruptures and continuities, in large or small scales.
