Abstract in Portuguese
O estudo abrange residências térreas, sobrados, moradias e comercio e moradias, comércio e rancho, observando as seguintes categorias de análise: implantação, planta baixa, materiais e técnicas construtivas. Utiliza fontes primárias, sobretudo levantamentos in loco e jornais disponíveis na Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira. Busca apoio teórico em pesquisas recentes, como a de Esdras Arraes; em autores locais, como Olavo Pereira da Silva Filho, Odilon Nunes, Monsenhor Chaves e Teresinha Queiroz; e em autores nacionalmente consolidados, como Paulo Thedim Barreto, Maria Cecília Naclério Homem, Nestor Goulart Reis Filho e Carlos Lemos.

Abstract in English
This work studies the urban residential architecture of the state of Piauí (Brazil) during the nineteenth century, a period in which this state's urban life was consolidated by the creation of a network of towns and cities. The cities of Oeiras, Parnaíba, Piracuruca, São Raimundo Nonato, Teresina, Pedro II, and Amarante, besides some examples from other urban sites, were selected to analyze the manifestations of urban architecture in Piauí based on several aspects, namely the urban development, the active professionals and the ordinances or by-laws in effect at that period. The study covers one and two-story residences, houses, commercial properties, and ranches, observing the following categories of analysis: implantation, floor plan, materials, and construction techniques. It defends the hypothesis that the urban housing in 19th century Piauí is plural and singular at the same time the distinct characteristics merge with common traits, giving unity to the various manifestations of these extensive regions of Piauí and making them inseparable from the place. It uses primary sources, mainly on-site surveys and newspapers available at Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira (The Brazilian Digital Newspaper Library). It seeks theoretical support in recent research, such as that by Esdras Arraes; in local authors, such as Olavo Pereira da Silva Filho, Odilon Nunes, Monsenhor Chaves, and Teresinha Queiroz; and in nationally consolidated authors, such as Paulo Thedim Barreto, Maria Cecília Naclério Homem, Nestor Goulart Reis Filho, and Carlos Lemos.
