A experiência sensorial é fundamental para a atividade dos arquitetos, seja na concepção do projeto, na vivência das construções ou na teoria da arquitetura. Nesse sentido, a corrente filosófica denominada fenomenologia contribuiu grandemente para o estudo da experiência. No entanto, as relações entre arquitetura e fenomenologia ainda constituem um tema pouco explorado dentro da teoria e história da arquitetura. Portanto, a presente dissertação de mestrado insere-se no contexto das investigações sobre as relações entre esses dois campos do saber. Embora seja inevitável tratar deste tema sem incluir questões da filosofia, esta pesquisa dá primazia às discussões a partir do campo arquitetônico, dedicando-se ao conhecimento que lhe é próprio. As investigações desenvolvem-se a partir do livro Architectures Historical Turn: Phenomenology and the rise of the postmodern - publicado em 2010 pelo arquiteto e historiador Jorge OteroPailos. Neste livro, o autor apresenta e problematiza o círculo de arquitetos que possuem uma relação expressiva com ideias fenomenológicas, sobretudo durante as décadas posteriores à Segunda Guerra Mundial nos Estados Unidos. O objetivo de Otero-Pailos é apresentar uma história intelectual da arquitetura, expondo a complexidade da evolução do pensamento e das ideias dentro do campo arquitetônico. Otero-Pailos propõe uma metodologia própria, chamada de historiografia poligráfica, e utiliza o termo architectural phenomenology (traduzido como fenomenologia da arquitetura) para referir-se ao seu objeto de estudo. A presente dissertação tece um comentário crítico sobre a pesquisa de Otero-Pailos, situando o autor em relação às discussões teóricas da arquitetura e buscando compreender os elementos de sua argumentação e metodologia, de modo a contribuir com estratégias e abordagens para o estudo das conexões entre arquitetura e fenomenologia. O principal dado que pode ser extraído da pesquisa de Otero-Pailos é sua aproximação ao tema sob o ponto de vista do campo arquitetônico, defendendo o conhecimento que é específico dos arquitetos. Sendo assim, esta dissertação discute um dos raros autores que investigam as ligações entre arquitetura e fenomenologia com profundidade e sob um ponto de vista histórico, oferecendo uma perspectiva sobre métodos de aproximação ao tema. Além disso, Otero-Pailos investiga a lacuna histórica referente à transição entre o modernismo e o pós-modernismo, lançando luz sobre as mudanças no campo das ideias e destacando a complexidade dos períodos de transição. Tal investigação é fundamental para se pensar a arquitetura na segunda metade do século XX. Por fim, a discussão dessas questões oferece subsídios para se debater os arquitetos e teóricos das décadas mais recentes que incorporam a fenomenologia em suas produções.

The sensorial experience is fundamental to the work of architects, whether in design, the experience of buildings, or the theory of architecture. In this way, the philosophical stream called phenomenology helped a lot in the study of experience. Nonetheless, relations between architecture and phenomenology are still not studied within the theory and history of architecture. Because of this, the present dissertation is in the context of investigations concerning the relationship between these two fields. Although it is inevitable to deal with this theme without including questions of philosophy, this research gives primacy to the discussions of the architectural field. The investigations developed from the book Architectures Historical Turn: Phenomenology and the rise of the postmodern - published in 2010 by the architect and historian Jorge Otero-Pailos. In this book, the author presents and discusses a circle of architects that bear an expressive relationship with phenomenological ideas, especially during post-World War II in the United States. Otero-Pailos aims to present an intellectual history of architecture, showing the complexity of the evolution of thoughts and ideas within the architectural field. Otero-Pailos offers a methodology called polygraphic historiography and uses the terminology architectural phenomenology to refer to his object of study. The present dissertation weaves a critical commentary about Otero-Pailos research, placing the author with the architectural theoric discussions and searching to comprehend the elements of his argumentation and methodology, so it can contribute to strategies and approaches for the study of the connections between architecture and phenomenology. The principal information that Otero-Pailos research brings is its approach to the architectural field, claiming the knowledge specific to the architects. Thus, this dissertation discusses one of the few authors that research the connections between architecture and phenomenology in a deep way and from a historical point of view, providing a perspective on methods of approaching the theme. Furthermore, OteroPailos investigates the historical lacuna of the transition from modernism to postmodernism, elucidating changes in the field of ideas and showing the complexity of periods of transition. This investigation is fundamental to thinking the architecture in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Finally, the discussion of these questions offers support for the debate of architects and theories of recent decades, which incorporated phenomenology in their productions.
