Impacts of Brazilian performance standard NBR 15575 on design and specification of constructive envelope coatings

Abstract in English
Analyses on the quality of constructions and the impact on the users thermal comfort promoted the adoption of normative references in several countries. In Brazil the version of the performance norms has been in force since of 2013 (NBR 15575: Residential Buildings Performance,) and aims at regulating both quality and performance of the buildings in Brazil. In order to comply with efficient standards in terms of energy consumption, the solar absorptance has been important for the composition of the constructive envelope and it influences on the quantity of energy absorbed by the envelope. In that context, this research aims at verifying how architectural and engineering firms, consultants, specifiers and construction companies are adapting their projects and buildings to the requirements of thermal performance established in NBR 15575 and whether the criteria for solar absorptance of the constructive envelope are being taken into consideration. Therefore, the methodology consisted of a bibliographical review and a field survey. Questionnaires were sent through a digital platform containing seventy two respondents; another one was sent to construction companies, where four professionals participated; and ultimately, interviews with three consultants for performance norms were conducted. Some of the main impacts that the performance norm imposed became evident, such as: modifications during the project elaboration, greater adherence to complying with the norm, changes during the specification of building materials, need for more technical data provided by the producers to be available and little information about the indexes of solar absorptance by the constructive envelope materials. Based on the data obtained, it was possible to measure the main impacts arisen from the compliance to the performance norm NBR 15575 and the access to the data related to solar absorptance of the materials which compose the constructive envelope.
