Desde sua difusão no final dos anos 1980, a noção de sustentabilidade vem sendo aplicada indiscriminadamente para justificar práticas bastante diferenciadas, inclusive na área da Arquitetura e do Urbanismo. Sendo assim, este trabalho pretende refletir, a partir de revisão da literatura, como ocorreu o surgimento e a propagação do discurso da sustentabilidade, indicando de que maneira tal discurso tem se inserido em nosso campo específico de atuação. Para tanto, após elencar os impactos ambientais ocasionados pelas atividades humanas, são analisados os eventos mundiais, as experiências teórico-práticas e as obras referenciais que introduziram e consolidaram a temática ambiental na agenda da Arquitetura e do Urbanismo. Além disso, com base na crítica da Economia Política, apresentamos a tese da insustentabilidade do nosso sistema hegemônico de (re)produção, o qual, desde suas origens, depende da exploração desmedida dos corpos humanos e da Natureza. Por isso, buscamos compreender como a construção de edificações e de cidades, ao longo do tempo, tem contribuído para dar continuidade à insustentável acumulação capitalista e às dinâmicas espaciais desiguais, em termos socioambientais, que lhe caracterizam. Face à incapacidade da sustentabilidade e do desenvolvimento sustentável em resolver os impactos socioambientais de nossa civilização termofóssil, outras noções surgiram como contrapontos: decrescimento, sobretudo no contexto europeu e norteamericano; e justiça ambiental e Bem Viver, em particular nos países do Sul global. O presente trabalho também se debruça sobre esses conceitos, investigando como seus princípios podem ajudar a repensarmos a produção de nosso setor de forma crítica à ideia vigente de arquitetura sustentável. Portanto, diante do quadro de colapso socioambiental iminente, os argumentos reflexivos e críticos que reunimos pretendem contribuir para a urgente e necessária transformação de nossos modos de ser e de estar no mundo.

Since its diffusion in the late 1980s, the notion of sustainability has been indiscriminately applied to justify quite different practices, including actions in the field of Architecture and urbanism. Thus, based on a literature review, this work intends to analyze how the sustainability discourse emerged and spread, investigating in which ways the idea of sustainability has been applied into our research area. In order to achieve this goal, after listing the environmental impacts caused by human activities, this work studies world conferences, theoretical-practical experiences, the reference works and buildings that introduced and consolidated the environmental theme in the agenda of Architecture and Urbanism. Furthermore, based on the critique of Political Economy, we present the thesis of the unsustainability of our hegemonic system of (re)production, which, since its origins, has depended on the intensive exploitation of human bodies and Nature. Therefore, we seek to understand how the construction of buildings and cities has contributed to the unsustainable capital accumulation over time, as well as to the unequal spatial dynamics that characterize it, especially in socio-environmental terms. Due to the inability of sustainability and sustainable development to solve the socio-environmental impacts caused by our thermo-industrial civilization, other notions emerged as counterpoints to them: degrowth, especially in the United States and Europe; and environmental justice and Buen Vivir, especially in the Global South countries. The present work focuses on these concepts in order to investigate how their principles can help rethink the production of our sector in a critical way to the prevailing idea of sustainable architecture. Thus, given the forecast of imminent socio-environmental collapse, the reflexive and critical arguments that we have gathered in this research intend to contribute to the urgent transformation of our way of life.
