Instituição de Longa Permanência para Idosos (ILPI)

Long-term care institutions for the elderly (LTCI)
Abstract in English
Long-term care institutions for the elderly (LTCI) can be a housing option for a growing demand in the current context, given the growing demand for long-term care. The ambience has a great influence on the well-being of the people sheltered there, mainly considering the perception of the elderly and their families, which there is a lack of publication in Brazil. The present research sought to investigate this aspect in two LTCIs in São Paulo that serve audiences with very different socioeconomic characteristics, considering well-being, belonging and environmental comfort. 20 older men and women, with preserved cognition, and 20 family members participated in this cross-sectional, descriptive, qualitative research. Data were collected through questionnaires and face-to-face interviews, which were recorded and transcribed in their entirety, and their content analyzed using thematic content analysis technique. The results showed positive perceptions about the three aspects, even though the LTCI A needs improvements regarding environmental comfort. The elderly reported feeling well and belonging to the environment, considering the institution as their home. Family members feel safe in relation to the elderly in the institution and recognize the quality of the service provided. Differences were found in relation to family ties, since at LTCI A the contacts and visits of family members are sporadic, while at LTCI B they are frequent, which provides a close relationship between the elderly and their families. It is considered then that there were no significant differences in the reports of the two groups, even though the institutions have different resources, structures and audiences, demonstrating that the ambience is considered satisfactory in both cases
