O turismo ecológico é uma modalidade que vem crescendo no país, sobretudo pelo seu caráter regenerativo, preservacionista e proximidade com a natureza e culturas locais. Compreende-se que as atividades de turismo ecológico quando bem planejadas e atrelado a educação ambiental contribuem com o protagonismo das comunidades locais, conservação dos biomas e formação para uma consciência ecológica dos sujeitos, através de atividades lúdicas, de lazer e educativas, que sensibilizam e estimulam o olhar cauteloso e respeitoso para o meio ambiente, além de ampliar a bagagem de conhecimento, que faz com que os sujeitos se aproximem da natureza, repensem seu modo de vida e compreendam a realidade, refutando a ideia de natureza como mercadoria e recurso inesgotável. No entanto, quando a atividade não é bem planejada, se apropria dos patrimônios naturais e culturais e traz impactos negativos ao destino, por isso, o estudo social dos ambientes que realizam ou pretendem realizar turismo em áreas naturais é essencial. Nesse contexto, emergiu a problemática da presente pesquisa, buscando compreender em que medida a atividade turística pode contribuir com a preservação do rio Paranapanema. Para responder à pergunta foi realizado um estudo no município de Campina do Monte Alegre/SP, especialmente na Cachoeira do Salto, localizado no Distrito de Salto, que é banhado pelo Rio Paranapanema e principal recurso turístico da cidade. Desse modo, o objetivo geral da pesquisa foi analisar o desenvolvimento da atividade turística no Distrito de Salto e de que maneira ela pode contribuir com a preservação do Rio Paranapanema. Assim sendo, foi identificado a visão da comunidade local em relação a atividade turística, analisado o perfil do visitante, identificado os usos do rio e identificado as ações da Prefeitura focadas no turismo ambiental e na proteção do Rio Paranapanema. Para alcançar os objetivos propostos, a dissertação foi desenvolvida por meio da combinação de pesquisa bibliográfica, documental e de campo, supondo a inserção da pesquisadora no atrativo natural estudado e através do contato com moradores, turistas, gestores e ambientalistas. Trata-se, portanto, de uma pesquisa qualitativa exploratória, onde foram aplicadas entrevistas semiestruturadas com 159 pessoas no total, sendo, 46 moradores, 101 turistas, 4 gestores e 8 ambientalistas que atuam no Distrito de Salto e região. Por fim, identificou-se que mesmo com vocação para o desenvolvimento do turismo ecológico devido a diversidade de espécies e recursos hídricos disponíveis, o potencial da cidade é subaproveitado, pois não há atividade de lazer e de educação ambiental estruturadas para que o visitante aproveite e conheça com mais propriedade o destino, se conecte com a natureza e apreenda sobre o valor histórico e natural do Rio Paranapanema e região. A proposta foi mostrar um novo olhar para o Rio Paranapanema, através do turismo e refletir sobre essa aproximação entre sujeitos e natureza, neste caso, uma aproximação com o Rio Paranapanema, Mata Atlântica e Cerrado, para que o turismo seja uma das ferramentas para o despertar ambiental e preservação deste importante recurso hídrico, que apesar de ser considerado o Rio mais limpo do Estado de São Paulo, já sofre sérios riscos ambientais devido ao desmatamento, irrigação, agrotóxico, resíduos industriais e domésticos, sendo urgente uma nova forma de se relacionar com esse recurso e com o planeta Terra, para o futuro das próximas gerações. Portanto, é notório que o Rio Paranapanema em toda sua extensão carece de planejamento, fiscalização, zoneamento ecológico e medidas alicerçadas na educação ambiental, definindo e limitando os seus múltiplos usos possíveis, dentre eles o turismo.

Ecological tourism is a modality that has been growing in the country, mainly due to its regenerative, preservationist nature and proximity to nature and local cultures. It is understood that ecological tourism activities, when well-planned and linked to environmental education, contribute to the protagonism of local communities, conservation of biomes and training for an ecological awareness of the subjects, through recreational, leisure and educational activities, which raise awareness and encourage a cautious and respectful look at the environment, in addition to expanding the baggage of knowledge, which makes subjects approach nature, rethink their way of life and understand reality, refuting the idea of nature as a commodity and an inexhaustible resource . However, when the activity is not well planned, it appropriates the natural and cultural heritage and brings negative impacts to the destination, therefore, the social study of the environments that carry out or intend to carry out tourism in natural areas is essential. In this context, the problem of the present research emerged, seeking to understand to what extent the tourist activity can contribute to the preservation of the Paranapanema River. To answer the question, a study was carried out in the municipality of Campina do Monte Alegre/SP, especially in Cachoeira do Salto, located in the District of Salto, which is bathed by the Paranapanema River and the city's main tourist resource. Thus, the general objective of the research was to analyze the development of tourist activity in the District of Salto and how it can contribute to the preservation of the Paranapanema River. Therefore, the view of the local community in relation to tourist activity was identified, the profile of the visitor was analyzed, the uses of the river identified and the actions of the City Hall focused on environmental tourism and the protection of the Paranapanema River. To achieve the proposed objectives, the dissertation was developed through a combination of bibliographical, documentary and field research, assuming the researcher's insertion in the studied natural attraction and through contact with residents, tourists, managers and environmentalists. It is, therefore, an exploratory qualitative research, where semi-structured interviews were applied with 159 people in total, being 46 residents, 101 tourists, 4 managers and 8 environmentalists who work in the District of Salto and region. Finally, it was identified that even with a vocation for the development of ecological tourism due to the diversity of species and water resources available, the city's potential is underutilized, since there are no leisure activities and structured environmental education for the visitor to enjoy and get to know the destination more properly, connect with nature and learn about the historical and natural value of the Paranapanema River and region. The proposal was to show a new look at the Paranapanema River, through tourism and reflect on this approximation between subjects and nature, in this case, an approximation with the Paranapanema River, Atlantic Forest and Cerrado, so that tourism is one of the tools for the environmental awakening and preservation of this important water resource, which despite being considered the cleanest river in the State of São Paulo, already suffers serious environmental risks due to deforestation, irrigation, pesticides, industrial and domestic waste, and a new way of relating is urgently needed with this resource and with planet Earth, for the future of the next generations. Therefore, it is notorious that the Paranapanema River in all its extension lacks planning, inspection, ecological zoning and measures based on environmental education, defining and limiting its multiple possible uses, among them tourism.
