Turismo urbano

Beyond a viaduct: an analysis of uses and discourses of the Minhocão Park

Abstract in English
The Presidente João Goulart highway/ Minhocão Park is an elevated road, built in 1971 in the city of São Paulo that currently performs double activity: besides a viaduct, it also functions as an elevated park. Its history was marked by a series of discussions and articulations about its future, with possibilities linked to its permanent deactivation of cars, the transformation into an elevated urban park - permanently or partially - or the overturning of the structure (via disassembly or demolition). Thus, this research aims to identify, describe and analyze, from a historical perspective, the uses and discourses associated with urban tourism and leisure in Minhocão, with reference to the circulation of urban models. Therefore, the selected methodology - qualitative and applied (GIL, 2008) - will use the techniques of bibliographic research, documentary research, semi-structured interviews and unstructured observation. The theoretical framework was based on three main themes: mobilities and circulation of urban models, strategic planning and city marketing, urban tourism and leisure. The obtained results allowed concluding that Minhocão users are represented by a varied set of actors - tourists, visitors and residents, in general - who present the possibility of sharing a tourist look while enjoying this space. Still, discourses related to Minhocão, it was shown that they are based on two different views of this structure, as an opportunity (in relation to its transformation into an elevated park) or as a problem (that would need a solution). From the notion of circulation of urban models, it is understood that the history of Minhocão was marked by the presence of urban influences, which can be summarized as: elevated expressways, elevated urban parks or road tearing experiences. Minhocão has presented itself as a powerful object of study to understand the current challenging urban phenomena, their strategies and representations, based on new meanings given mainly to public spaces
