A Agricultura Urbana e Periurbana (AUP) é um termo amplo utilizado para o cultivo de alimentos e criação de animais dentro e ao redor das cidades. É reconhecida por sua multifuncionalidade e por apresentar benefícios sociais, ecológicos e econômicos. Por isso, deve ser um ponto de atenção para a sustentabilidade de uma grande metrópole. Ao focar a agricultura urbana como um fenômeno de mobilização de capitais com fluxos entre redes de confiança, com necessidades de colaboração para gerar benefícios individuais e coletivos, nota-se que existe um potencial em olhar por uma lente teórica que capte as relações. Assim, a presente pesquisa tem como objetivo compreender o papel do capital social e das redes sociais para as experiências de agricultura urbana na cidade de São Paulo. Aqui é conduzida uma Análise de Redes Sociais de relações de apoio e de associativismo e uma análise qualitativa de entrevistas realizadas com iniciativas de escala e de visibilidade de diferentes regiões da cidade. Como resultado, apresentam-se os objetivos, principais desafios e recursos necessários para a manutenção dos espaços. Também desenvolve-se uma análise dos aspectos cognitivos, relacionais e estruturais do capital social desta rede, assim como a análise de seus efeitos para a agricultura urbana e alguns desafios impostos em sua construção. A partir da análise é possível constatar que a agricultura urbana se beneficia, ao mesmo tempo que gera e amplia o capital social na rede das comunidades envolvidas. Este capital é importante para obter recursos para as atividades diárias nas hortas. Ele também permite que conhecimentos e informações importantes circulem com mais facilidade, desenvolvendo as técnicas e práticas empregadas. Para as iniciativas de escala, a formação de capital social é importante para a comercialização dos produtos e inserção dos agricultores nos sistemas alimentares locais, facilitando parcerias importantes com outros agricultores, com fornecedores e possibilitando a criação de novos espaços de comercialização, aproximando-os também dos consumidores. Para as iniciativas de visibilidade, os efeitos particulares reconhecidos foram o aumento da segurança, diminuição da depredação nos espaços das hortas e a inibição do efeito carona

Urban and Periurban Agriculture (UPA) is a broad term used for food cultivation and livestock in and around cities. It is recognized for its multifunctionality and for presenting social, ecological and economic benefits. Therefore, it should be a point of attention for the sustainability of a great metropolis. Looking at urban agriculture as a phenomenon of capital mobilization with flows within networks of trust and the need for collaboration to generate individual and collective benefits, there is a potential to look through a theoretical lens that captures relationships. Thus, this research aims to understand the role of social capital and social networks for the experiences of urban agriculture in the city of São Paulo. A Social Network Analysis of relationships of support and association is conducted, as well as a qualitative analysis of interviews carried out with scale and visibility initiatives from different regions of the city. As a result, the goals, main challenges and resources needed to maintain the spaces are presented. An analysis of the cognitive, relational and structural aspects of the social capital is also developed, as well as an analysis of its effects for urban agriculture and some challenges imposed for its construction. From the analysis, it is possible to verify that urban agriculture benefits from, at the same time that it generates and expands social capital in the network involved. This capital is important to obtain resources for daily activities in the gardens. It also allows important knowledge and information to circulate better, developing the techniques and practices employed. For scale initiatives, the creation of social capital is important for insertion of farmers in the local food system, facilitating important partnerships with other farmers, with suppliers and enabling new market opportunities, bringing consumers closer together. For the visibility initiatives, the particular effects recognized were increased security, reduced depredation and inhibition of the free rider effect
