Abstract in English
The permanence of the Cavalhada, considered the most open-air folk theater in Brazil, has motivated many researches. This encenation recalls, ritualistically, the fighting between Moors and Christians in the Iberian Peninsula, focusing on the resistance undertaken by the Emperor Charlemagne and the Twelve Peers of France, the Cavalhada has always been subject to adaptations and revisions, even maintaining a certain fidelity to the sources on which it is based. Charlemagne, the king of France who lives in the imaginary of the Iberian Peninsula, Spanish America, Brazil and former African colonies, as archetype of the savior king, even though this idealization does not match the historical figure, it is the character-synthesis, although, in the two municipalities, the role of protagonist fits better in his opponent, the Moorish King. This study was carried out in the cities of Bom Jesus da Lapa and Serra do Ramalho, near each other, divided by the São Francisco river in its middle course in Bahia. In order to understand the relations of power that surround the popular manifestation, we search historical processes, not forgetting the social facts and subjective meanings that resulted in their re-signification and helped us to understand the reasons for their permanence in contemporary times. After all, Cavalhada, rooted in the Middle Ages (period of expansion of the "imaginary domain"), even competing with large events in the culture industry, not only survives in Brazil, but also demonstrates a certain vitality, permeating many dimensions of symbolic life in the backwoods communities
