Abstract in English
The vertiginous verticalization process of Vila Romana, part of the District of Lapa, in the western region of São Paulo, erases what was once one of the states most important industrial neighborhoods. The aim of this work is to reflect on the constitution of Vila Romana as a place of memory a concept under construction in the Metropolis of São Paulo, based on the collective memory of its subjects, initiatives by civil society in favor of the preservation of historical buildings and the multiple identities that shape this territory in severe modification. Influenced by the work of authors such as Halbwachs (1990), Nora (1993) and Hall (1996; 1997; 2001; 2003), 6 testimonies by former residents of the neighborhood were analyzed, supported by the oral history method, which show us how individual and collective personal experiences contribute to the understanding of the group in a given space. We realized that understanding the subjective relationships between identity, and place can be fundamental to contribute to a more effective and democratic political participation within the universe of memories of the residents of this region of São Paulo
