Esta dissertação é resultado de uma pesquisa dedicada à análise da produção Uma Terrível Beleza, da artista sul-africana Mary Sibande. A obra é uma imagem impressa e faz parte de uma série de trabalhos que tematizam eventos específicos da história da África do Sul. A imagem mostra, ao centro, uma personagem feminina que é representada pela própria artista. Articulamse, nos trabalhos de Sibande, as categorias de raça, gênero e classe, tendo por inspiração decorrências pessoais e acontecimentos coletivos, ligados entre si por um contexto social determinado. A complexidade dessas relações se manifesta na obra por sua forma ambígua, incompatível com uma apreensão totalizante sobre o corpo. A pesquisa favorece uma perspectiva interseccional, que compreende a identidade não como algo homogêneo, mas como formação envolvendo uma multiplicidade de fatores e relações de poder. Busca-se contemplar, por meio deste trabalho, dimensões diversas em torno de um indivíduo e a forma como são evocadas pela materialidade da obra

This dissertation is the result of a research dedicated to the analysis of the piece A Terrible Beauty, by the South African artist Mary Sibande. The artwork is a printed image, part of a series of works that focus on specific events in the history of South Africa. The image shows at the center a female character that is represented by the artist herself. The categories of race, gender and class are articulated in Sibande's works, inspired by personal and collective events, closely linked by a specific social context. The complexity of these relationships is manifested in the work by its ambiguous form, incompatible with a totalizing apprehension of the body. The research favors an intersectional perspective, which understands identity not as something homogeneous, but as a formation involving a multiplicity of factors and power relations. Through this work, we seek to contemplate different dimensions around an individual and the way they are evoked by the materiality of the work
