Abstract in English
This work aims to bring the reader closer to the art of engraving in high and low relief on gemstones, named glyptic. To achieve the proposed objective, the technique of this art and its history, the creative process of craftsmen who develop it in Brazil and Europe, and the practices performed by the researcher were investigated. As a result of the methods used in the research based on a bibliographic review, interviews, participation in practical courses, museums visits and the making of pieces , the materials and tools used to make the jewelry presented here, the symbologies, the meanings and applications of engraved gemstones stand out as relevant elements to understand the relevance of these objects and the way people relate to them in different societies and historical periods. For constructing the dissertation, different areas of knowledge were interwoven, such as art history, jewelry history, social history of art and literature, gemology, and sustainability. Such approach, added to the author's practical experiences, elucidated the feasibility and creative expansion of the production of pieces on the jewelry worktable, leading to the generation of the repreciosar [making the object precious again] concept, a term coined by the researcher which, in short, means the reuse and the valorization of damaged and discarded gemstones (finite natural resources). As a major producer and exporter of raw gemological material, Brazil has great potential to expand the number of qualified professionals in the techniques of this art. Such expansion, coupled with other actions, would act positively in minimizing the damage caused to natural resources in the field of jewelry
