Abstract in English
With the natural decline in physiological functions, the seniors needs for different forms of assistance arise, in order to maintain their quality of life. It is needed to carry out medical treatments of all kinds, constant monitoring and accompaniment or just company, in cases where senior people choose to remain at home, living on their own. The demand for care grows as the senior population grows worldwide, the need for professional caregivers increases, and the existing caregivers are overwhelmed. The demand for care grows as the older adults population worldwide grows too, which leads to an increase in the demand for professional caregivers, culminating in an overload of work experienced by already existing caregivers. To fulfill these needs, assistive technology have been used in senior care throughout history, with walking sticks, walkers, hearing aids and many more, focused on extending the users independence and quality of life. Among the wide array of assistive technology available, it is possible to highlight social robots and virtual assistants, with several possible practical applications for assistants and caregivers. A social robot is a specific type of robot, designed focusing the interaction with its user by simulating human behavior on the interactions. A virtual assistant is an application, whose primary form of data entry is dialog, capable of integrating applications, interacting with other devices and, mainly, facilitating its user's interaction with technology. An assistive solution that use robots in general or virtual assistants, when employed in care-related activities, tend to explore only the individual functionalities of one of the employed technology. The combination of a social robot and a virtual assistant would allow the creation of an assistive solution in which the robot's functionalities would be complemented by the virtual assistant, which would also be complemented by the features offered by the robot. There are assistive solutions that utilize robots or virtual assistants, but just few of them do explore the possibility of combining both technologies. The purpose of this project is to present an assistive solution focused in to care of seniors utilizing the functionalities offered by social robots and virtual assistants combined. The assistive solution aims to benefit its users in the management of their medical schedule and other daily activities, besides opening doors for the exploration of new possibilities and many evolutions to care related technology. In order to validate the assistive solution, an experiment was carried through, in which potential users were able to simulate care and schedule management related situations, to understand the relationship of the senior with the technology, their perceptions and evaluations about the assistive solution itself. With the positive evaluations in the experiment, it was possible to notice that the assistive solution would not only be useful and appreciated in care related activities, but it could also in daily activities.
