Owls are birds of prey with hunting activities, belonging to the order Strigiformes and which have anatomical adaptations that assist in hunting. From nocturnal, daytime or twilight habits, they arouse interest due to their visual complexity. Aiming to contribute to knowledge in this area, this study wishes to compare eye biometrics and correlations with corneal diameter and body weight in two species of owls (Athene cunicularia and Megascops choliba) with different activity patterns and similar physical size. B-mode ultrasound examinations were performed on both eyes of 10 Athene cunicularia (burrowing owl) and 16 adult Megascops choliba (tropical screech owl), healthy and with no changes in the eyes and / or their attachments. Subsequently, biometric measurements were determined regarding axial length of the bulb (ALB), anterior chamber (AC), lens (L), vitreous chamber (VC) and pecten (P), which were recorded in millimeters. The horizontal corneal diameter (CD) was also measured by digital pachymetry. Biometrics were compared between eyes and species. Correlations between axial length and corneal diameter and weight were verified. There was a significant difference between the weight of the two species, owls of the Athene cunicularia species being heavier (154.6 ± 10.3 g) than Megascops choliba (119.3 ± 15, 7 g). When comparing the biometrics between the right (RE) and left (LE) eyes, there were no significant differences in Athene cunicularia; in Megascops choliba, but significant differences were observed in the measurement of AC (3.56 ± 0.15 and 3.49 ± 0.17 mm, respectively) and VC (8.45 ± 0.21 and 8.43 ± 0, 2 mm, respectively). When comparing the biometric values between the eyes of the two species, there was a significant difference in RE, in L measurements (6.18 ± 0.18 and 5.15 ± 1.67cm), greater in Athene cunicularia, and VC ( 8.52 ± 0.21 and 9.14 ± 0.71 mm), higher in Megascops choliba. In LE, there was a difference in the measures of CA (3.49 ± 0.17 and 3.71 ± 0.22 mm), L (6.19 ± 0.19 and 5.11 ± 1.55 mm) and VC ( 8.43 ± 0.20 and 9.15 ± 0.67 mm), with AC and VC being superior in Megascops choliba and the biometry of L major in Athene cunicularia. The corneal diameter did not differ between the eyes and between species. The correlation between ALB and CD was weak in RE and very strong in LE in Athene cunicularia; in Megascops choliba it was very strong in RE and very weak in LE. The correlation of the measurement between the eyes was strong in Athene cunicularia and weak in Megascops choliba. The correlation between ALB and weight was weak in Athene cunicularia and very weak in Megascops choliba. It was concluded that biometry by B-mode ocular ultrasound consisted of a feasible and efficient examination in obtaining data regarding the measurements on the eyes of the two species of owls in the studied. It was possible to establish the biometric parameters of normality and to verify the particularities between the species, as well as the correlations between the axial length of the eye with the corneal diameter and the weight. The results showed that the differences between species, particularly in measurements such as axial length of the eye and corneal diameter, which have been related to activity patterns in birds, were not expressive, indicating a similarity in the conformation of the eyes between the species Athene cunicularia and Megascops choliba, considered respectively as day-twilight and night owls.
