Abstract in English
Changes in the articular process joints (APJ) of the cervical spine of horses can lead to compromised well-being and decreased performance. Ultrasonography is an easily accessible exam that allows the identification of changes in the bone margins of the APJs as well as changes in adjacent soft tissues. This study aims to identify the prevalence of ultrasonographic (US) changes of the cervical APJs and to investigate the relationship between such findings with the presence of clinical signs in a population of showjumping and dressage horses. For this purpose, clinical and US examination of the cervical spine were carried out systematically and prospectively by single, blinded evaluators. Ultrasonographic examination of the APJs between C2 and T1 was performed in transverse and longitudinal sections. The prevalence of different US findings in APAs varied according to joint levels, and in general, they were not associated with age or sports modality. Clinical examination findings such as muscle atrophy and positive palpation, as well as reports of decreased performance, were associated with some US findings such as irregularities in bone margins and the presence of hyperechoic floating spots. Results of this study indicate that ultrasound examination is a good auxiliar tool for diagnosis of APA changes.
