Abstract in English
Obesity is a disease chronically associated with metabolic, hormonal and inflammatory changes that, among several predisposing factors, discuss the role of the intestinal microbiome in its genesis or as a potential therapeutic resource. In this way, the benefits on bacterial modulation through the use of probiotics, prebiotics and symbiotics are increasingly studied in different applications. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the possible effects of adding probiotics to hypocaloric dry food provided for weight loss to obese dogs. To this end, two foods of the same composition were produced, differing by the addition of a probiotic ingredient by covering one of them. The use of these foods in a randomized manner in obese patients resulted in the formation of two experimental groups, control (CON) and probiotic (PRO). Through the collection of fecal samples obtained after the weight loss procedure, the composition of the fecal microbiota was determined. Additionally, the parameters obtained from weight loss were evaluated, as well as the biochemical profile (triglycerides, cholesterol, fructosamine, glycemia, renal and hepatic profile), inflammatory (C-reactive protein and serum cytokines IL-1 β, IL-6, IL -10 and TNF-α) and metabolic (insulin, leptin, glucagon, ghrelin, amylin, PPY, GLP1, CCK) of the animals. The project was conducted in a prospective randomized clinical trial where 14 obese dogs, classified as a body condition score (BCS) of 8 or 9 on a 9-point scale were conducted monthly until they reached 20% weight loss or the ideal BCS 5 /9. The groups showed no statistical difference (p<0.05) in relation to weight loss program metrics, such as: time to weight loss (p=0.744), weekly weight loss rate (p=0.195), amount of weight lost (p=0.228), as well as biochemical, inflammatory and hormonal parameters. Thus, based on the results obtained and under the conditions of the study, the addition of the probiotic ingredient did not result in a difference in the treatment of obesity.
