Abstract in English
The objective of this study was to evaluate two levels and three sources of energy in the maternal diet and their long term effects on the progeny, with evaluations on performance, growth, carcass characteristics, viscera and bone of male lambs. Fifty- seven ewes were randomly distributed in four nutritional treatments: CTL - energy level according to NRC recommendation (2007); AMI - diet with 10% more energy than CTL, with energy source being starch; GP - AMI diet with protected fat supplement; Cr - AMI diet with chromium propionate supplementation. To evaluate this effect onprogeny, male performance parameters, carcass, non-carcass components and bonedensity were measured. The experiment was designed in blocks, with separation of thetype of delivery (single or multiple), with eight repetitions and four treatments and compared by contrast. CTL animals presented lower parameters in initial weight, slaughter weight, dry matter consumption during the whole confinement period, lower respiratory tract weights, kidneys, rumen and liver size, organs responsible for optimizing the productive performance of the animal. The animals of the CTL group also had lower carcass weight, although the lambs were slaughtered at the same age. The study also showed that maternal energy nutrition influences the bone formation of their offspring, and the greater energy intake enables the formation of lambs with larger and heavier bones. The lower bone density of lambs may make them more susceptible to bone damage and limit their growth. This has the greatest impact if the lamb is grazed or used for breeding. Among the treatments with 10% more energy, the parameters were similar to each other in most of the studied parameters, proving the effectiveness of using chromium as a supplement and protected fat.
