Abstract in English
Leishmania spp. are protozoan parasites that are causative agents of diseases known as leishmaniasis, which usually constitute in a major public health problem in several countries, including Brazil. The most serious clinical form of the disease, known as visceral leishmaniasis, is caused by the etiological agent Leishmania infantum and transmitted by vectors of the genus Lutzomyia, being the dog deemed as its main reservoir in the urban environment. It has been shown that cats can also be infected by this parasite, developing a persisting infection generally without occurrence of clinical signs, which renders difficult to obtain accurate epidemiological data. Molecular methods currently used to diagnose feline leishmaniasis are still very diverse between them and thus difficult to compare. Detection using conjunctival swab samples has shown good results, and theres an advantage because it is a non-invasive method although, sometimes, especially difficult to be performed in cats due to its intrinsic behavior, which favors the hypothesis of performing a molecular diagnostic procedure in cats from oral swab samples - which has already been successfully performed on dogs. Samples of oral swab, conjunctival swab and blood was collected from 100 cats living in shelters located in Ilha Solteira (municipality in the state of São Paulo), an endemic region for visceral leishmaniasis, to evaluate if Polymerase Chain Reaction performed from oral swab samples can be used as a diagnostic method for feline leishmaniasis, as well as establishing comparisons with other molecular and serological methods used for diagnosis in this species.
