Abstract in English
A cross-sectional study was conducted on the epidemiological situation of bovine tuberculosis in the state of Tocantins. The state was divided into five regions and in each of them a random number of predetermined properties was sampled. Within each property, females aged 24 months or older were randomly selected and submitted to the Comparative Cervical Tuberculin test. Animals that proved inconclusive were retested with the same diagnostic procedure at least 60 days apart. In all, 11,926 animals from 757 farms were tuberculinized. The prevalence for infected herds was 0.16% [0.023; 1.15] and for infected animals was 0.009% [0.001; 0.063]. Only one animal was positive for bovine tuberculosis, detected in the northern region of Araguaína. Due to the very low prevalence, the best strategy to be adopted by Tocantins is the implementation of eradication strategies through surveillance system for detection and sanitation of residual infected herds, assessing the feasibility of incorporating elements of risk-based surveillance.
