Abstract in English
Equine infectious anemia (EIA) is an untreated transmissible infectious disease. Health law determines the euthanasia of infected horses, resulting in economic losses for the affected properties. The present study estimated the prevalence of EIA in the State of Paraná in the year 2018 and evaluated potential risk factors from a sample design of which 4061 horses from 981 properties were tested and the information obtained were submitted to logistic regressions. The analyzes were performed using the Agar Gel Immunodiffusion technique (IDGA) and the true prevalence found was 1.71% (95% CI: 0.68% - 2.75%) in farms and 0.56% (95% CI: 0.14% - 0.97%) in equines. Among the risk factors analyzed, only the total number of males, the presence of flooded areas on the properties and the introduction of horses showed statistical association with EIA. The low prevalence of the disease limited the interpretation of the estimated associations. It is necessary to investigate the risk associated with untested horses that remain on the properties as reservoirs of the disease and those that transit illegally.
