Abstract in English
Leptospirosis has a worldwide distribution, being considered one of the most important zoonoses in the world, affecting animals and humans in a variety of ways. Although studies on the seroprevalence of leptospirosis in horses demonstrate that the exposure of horses to the pathogen is high, most animals are affected subclinically, causing great damage to horse breeding in Brazil and worldwide. The objective of this study is to evaluate the seroprevalence of leptospirosis in horses used for reproduction in 2016 and 2019 in the State of Santa Catarina and the associated risk factors. In the state of Santa Catarina, in 2016, blood serum was collected from 305 horses and in 2019 and 2020 a total of 103. The test used was the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT). In 2016, 145 (47.5%) had antibodies to Leptospira spp., while 2019 and 2020 only 34 (33%) were seropositive. As for risk factors, in 2016 the factors that showed statistical significance for the type of reproduction, where the natural breeding was a risk factor, as well as mares that had fetal resorption and animals that traveled. As for the most prevalent serogroups in the year, we had Icterohaemorrhagiae serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae (22.8%), Pomona serovar Pomona (18.6%) and Icterohaemorrhagiae serovar Copenhageni (14.3%). Serogroup Panama serovar Panama only 1 specimen with a titre of 1600 indicating a source of active serogroup infection in the state. As for the most prevalent serogroups in the years 2019- 20, we had Cynopteri serovar Cynopteri (12.4%), Pomona serovar Pomona (12.4%) and Australis serovar Australis (6.2%). Both serogroup Panama serovar Panama and Cynopteri serovar Cynopteri do not belong to the list of serovars present in commercial vaccines available for horses. The State of Santa Catarina showed a wide distribution of seroprevalents, and there may be climate and continuing education influences on the prevalence of the disease. Epidemiological monitoring of the disease in horses is necessary for the creation of effective zoonosis control programs in the state.
