Abstract in English
Quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC) are cationic bioactive surfactants used as detergents and disinfectants, with activity against fungi, Gram positive and negative bacteria and enveloped viruses. Disinfectants based on benzalkonium chloride (quaternary ammonium compound) are widely used in Brazilian aviculture. Reports of QAC resistance are frequent increasing, in a cosmopolitan way, through gene mutation or horizontal transfer of mobile genetic elements. The aim of this study was to analyze the presence of QAC resistance genes in strains of Escherichia coli isolated from poultry. Cloacal and clinical samples were collected to isolate E. coli. The research for genes qacE and sugE, encoders of efflux pumps, was carried out by conventional PCR. 422 strains were analyzed, 302 from cloacal samples and 120 from clinical samples. 271 total strains (64.21%) were positive for qacE and 180 (42.65%) were positive for sugE(c) . The qacE gene was detected among fecal isolates (62.25%) and clinical strains (69.16%). In a lower frequency, were detected positive sugE(c) strains from fecal samples (37.41%) and clinical samples (55.83%). The results found confirm the importance of efflux pumps in QAC resistance and the presence of these genes in the poultry production.
