Abstract in English
Bothrops insularis is a critically endangered species from Ilha da Queimada Grande (IQG) SP, located about 34 km off the coast of São Paulo. The reproductive cycle is considered seasonal and its reproductive strategies are similar to those of the continental species. The object of this research is to register and analyze the reprodutive and behavioral habits of Bothrops insularis, with an emphasis on intersexuality. Five expeditions were carried out to IQG between 2019 and 2020. The 1.670m trail was partially covered through time-limited visual search, comprehending all habitats. Additionally, 30 individuals of B. insularis in captivity, from Instituto Butantan and CEVAP (UNESP Botucatu) laboratories were analyzed. Data collected from 1995 to 2006, referring to 30 expeditions made to IQG were compiled for comparison of reproductive activity. This material was dealt with the Statistical Analysis System. Prior to the analysis, the normality of the residues was verified using the Shapiro-Wilk test. In the present work, it was possible to observe the existence of two morphotypes, females without hemiclitoris and intersex, and intersex individuals showed greater activity throughout the seasons, with a greater peak in the reproductive period. The sex ratio of intersex gaps increased over the years, decreasing the frequency of males, as well as abstinence without hemiclitoris. One specimen was collected in September 2019 for monthly monitoring of its reproductive stage, as it was a female that did not have the hemiclitoris, whose encounters are rarer. Analysis of intersex females showed that the size of the hemiclitoris is very close to the hemipenis of males. We suggest species in situ monitoring to be essential to better understand its reproductive strategies, aiming to its conservation.
