Social Behavior
Abstract in English
Dog social behavior can be defined as a set of behaviors performed during interspecific interactions. This behavior can be divided into four periods: neonatal, the transition period; socialization and juvenile. This work aims to analyze the social interaction between muscular dystrophy affected dogs with other unaffected dogs and to verify whether there is a difference in social interaction. The study was divided into two experiments. In the first one, a 9-year-old male dog affected by muscular dystrophy and four female dogs carrying the dystrophy gene, but not affected by dystrophy, aged between 6 and 7 years were analyzed. In the second were selected 8 puppies, being 3 unaffected females and 3 males, where 2 were affected by muscular dystrophy and 1 not, born from the crossing of a carrier female and a normal male. Dog behavior was filmed and analyzed in three categories: pack behavior; social interaction between dogs and occupation of territory. The results of the first experiment were described and compared with each other. Those in the second experiment were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney statistical test for independent factors. The results obtained in the first experiment indicate that there was a difference between the behavior of the affected male and the other unaffected females. The results obtained by experiment 2 indicate that the appearance of this difference coincides with the onset of the first symptoms of the disease and worsens if the affected animals are separated from the unaffected animals. Based on these results we can conclude that there are differences between dogs affected by muscular dystrophy and that this difference is related to the muscular dystrophy itself.
