Letrozol

Morphoquantitative evaluation of the effect of aromatase inhibition on the hippocampus of Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus)

Abstract in English
It is known that women are more susceptible to the development of Alzheimer's disease when compared to men of advanced age; this predilection may be related to chronic estrogen deficiency due to menopause, since this hormone is known to be of great relevance for the protection and modulation of the central nervous system; deficiency of this hormone may influence the ability of microglial cells to degrade β- amyloids in the brain. The hippocampus is one of the target regions of Alzheimer's disease and is related to memory and learning deficits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the inhibition of estradiol on the total volume of Rattus norvegicus hippocampus submitted to deficits of this hormone in a period of 120 days, since hippocampal atrophy represents an important marker for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. For this, histological techniques for the brain and stereological quantification tools were applied to the brain of female Wistar rats submitted to gonadal extirpation, as well as inhibition of aromatase by the administration of letrozole.
