Prosódia

Syntactic negation and pragmatics: from a study of prosody and informational structure in German

Prosody
Abstract in English
The study aims to relate the syntactic and pragmatic levels of German negation thorough prosody and informational structure, based on empirical data. "Negation" is understood as the exclusion of an item from the partial set of potential alternatives appropriated to a given communicative moment, and the interaction between syntactic negation and prosodic structure is being investigated in reference to two parallel unities: the prosodic phrase (an informational unity structured from a nuclear accent, the focus - Moroni 2010; Blühdorn 2012 -, and characterized as the material comprehended between the projections of two nuclear accents) and the sentence (simple or complex). The basis for the study is a prosodic notation (Moroni 2006) of part of three dialogues from the Datenbank gesprochenes Deutsch. For the study, 135 utterances (corresponding to prosodic phrases) were identified, containing at least one of the negative syntactic elements listed in Duden Grammatik (2005). There is a clear predominance of the particle nicht, possibly due to the text type (oral discussions), with a higher use of referential expressions for rhetorical purposes and the consequent reflexes of the selection of the syntactic element. Starting from the position of the negative element in the sentence, the syntactic scope of negation (the constituent to its left in syntactic basic serialization - Blühdorn 2012) was established. The prosodic saliences in this interval were analyzed according to the informational structure, having, as initial parameters, the position of the nuclear accent relative to the negative syntactic element. Considering that syntactic negation is built through a focus particle and restricted to its scope, focus and topic accents (Büring 1997, 2005) were considered only at this interval. Other prosodic saliences were not included in the analysis, as they refer to the utterance as a whole and not to negation in particular. The presence or absence of prosodic marks in the syntactic scope and their relative position to the negative element allowed the identification of 20 prosodic patterns with a differentiated distribution of frequency of occurrence. The five most frequent patterns respond to 62% of all occurrences, with the first three presenting negation without prosodic marks and the following two, negation as a topic in utterances. The informal structure established for the several patterns was then analyzed in reference to the utterance in order to establish a relationship between the syntactic and pragmatic levels of negation. 39% of the utterances (or 46%, including complex sentences) are identical to a sentence and show synchronization between prosodic and syntactic structures. Another 16% of the utterances were comprised of material corresponding to only part of a sentence, where the multiplication of nuclear marks lends power to the speaker's contribution, with elements of the same proposition presented as answers to individual basic questions. On the other hand, in 45% of utterances the reunion of several sentences in a prosodic phrase allows the speaker to keep his turn ix longer and to present a more complex unity of meaning, forcing the interlocutor to follow the speaker's argumentative strategy. In 78% of utterances, the focus remains within the scope of negation, thus displaying a direct intersection between negation and the basic question of the utterance, even when the negative element does not become a prosodic salience. In the patterns where negation has no prosodic marks, it is used only as an option for the presentation of the issue at hand (i.e. in its negative form). While there are no differences in syntactic or semantic negation, there is an important pragmatic difference between presenting negation as the center or an integrant part of the communicative intention and just presenting it as a basis for a diverse communicative intention. The addition of a topic accent to the same syllable that holds the focus accent has been proved especially productive, allowing the speaker to mark elements belonging to the common knowledge basis as needing to be reactivated and reevaluated - with important communicative effects due to the generation of implicatures (Levinson 2000). As for illocution, two fundamental communicative possibilities for the use of syntactic negation were identified: as a way to block the flow of the interaction and/or the interlocutor's argumentation and as information about the non-applicability of an item, for argumentative purposes. By detailing the dichotomy in eleven communicative functions (such as dissent, doubt etc.) it is possible to establish relations between the informational structure codified by the prosodic patterns and their function in the interaction. From the interaction between informational structure and communicative function, specific speech intentions can be identified and make the patterns more or less suited to each communicative intention. These are chosen by the speaker according to rhetoric strategies and for the generation of implicatures, especially for Face-work purposes.
