Abstract in Portuguese
As características do curso indicam rigidez pedagógica, rigor disciplinar, carga didática volumosa, valorização do ensino prático e dedicação docente.

Abstract in English
This study is based on the project “Birth Memories: midwives and birth attendance in the city of São Paulo (1930-1980)" conducted in partnership between the Health Institute of the Secretary of Health of the State of São Paulo and the School of Nursing of the Universidade de São Paulo (EEUSP) and is part of a larger project about the “History of Health Workers". The aim was to describe and analyze the education and practice of midwives graduated at the Universidade de São Paulo after 1940 and working in the city of São Paulo. This is a qualitative research with a historical approach. Regarding its methodology, the main theoretical approach is the Oral History. The proceedings of the Midwifery School of São Paulo were used as documental resources. Their contents were analyzed and interpreted in order to increase the knowledge about the education of the midwives graduated at this school. The oral resources were the interviews with ten midwives, conducted according to a partially structured form, between 2000 and 2001. The interviews were held after giving oral and written information to interviewees and receiving their voluntary consent; the project was approved by the Ethical Committee Research of EEUSP. The inclusion criteria were to be graduated at USP and to have practiced in the city of São Paulo. The analysis of thematic content was used, being complemented by bibliographic resources. Based on the content analysis the material was classified in the themes: Professional Education and Professional Career. The theme From Pride to Resignation represents the final synthesis of the data analysis and interpretation. The documental analysis and the testimonies show that the demands for application were increasing along the years, until the course became an university program, in 1962. Regarding the professional choice, the midwives pointed out vocational gift and family support. The knowledge reproduced in the course was essentially male and medical, given by influential professors in the obstetrics area at that time. The characteristics of this course indicate pedagogical rigidity, strict disciplinary, vast didactic load, importance of practical learning and the dedication of the professors and instructors. The relationship between students, professors and professionals of the services reflect the hierarchy established in the health area. The education received had a large influence in the profile of the alumni. The midwives professional practice consisted mainly in the care given during delivery at several private and some public hospitals and maternities, including the Home Obstetric Service, in the 1960s. After the 1970s, the midwives and nurse-midwives were being excluded from birth care and substituted by doctors. This process was concomitant to the increase in the interventions during delivery and cesarean births. The testimonies reveal an enchantment by the profession that survives the feeling of resignation due to the “almost extinction" of midwives, in São Paulo. It is as if the pride relights the dignity and self-reliance that has followed those that once decided to become midwives.
