This research aims to investigate the multiple schooling strategies of adolescents and adults, paying attention at the historical forms of education and literacy of these age groups placed into circulation in São Paulo society, between 1870 and 1950, organized by the different groups, one located in the government spheres, and the other in the privated sector. In this way, not only the literacy campaigns that began in the 1940s and which had great historical visibility, highligting specially an earlier moment in the second half of the nineteenth century, when several efforts also had a projection in the creation and diffusion of reading and writing to adolescents and adults, whether in official night schools, in the action of the Masonic Lodges, in the initiatives from the Catholic Church, the Black Movement and immigrants. From the first steps of the constitution of school form, in the nineteenth century, the school opens up to the population of various ages. The distinction is made by the exclusion of the slave and separation of the sexes in the school environment. At that time, the age range differentiation is not a problem either to get in the school benches or at the preparation of the content to be taught. It was only with the creation of school groups in São Paulo (1893-1894) that they associated the school year with a calendar year, the age series, the series knowledge, establishing a homogeneous progression of the student in the universe of the school, that the question of age began to be thematized and the older students stigmatized by inadequacy to the new guidelines imposed on elementary school At the same time, by extending elementary schooling to five years of age, the less advantaged students were gradually being pushed aside pressed by the entry into the job market (struggle for individual and family survival). The elementary school then became consolidated as a place of passage from childhood. Simultaneously, childhood and adolescence were distinguished, in a such way that only in the 1920s appeared the first agreements related to the personal characteristics of the teenage years. When circumscribing the analyzes to the called adolescence (later youth), the studies do not operate with the historical constitution of the concept and they perceive the concern with the education of this age range group from only the years 1940. It was sought to make a wide bibliographical review on the history of the education thematic of teenage and adults, sought to give visibility to the sources little known and used in research on the history of literacy in São Paulo.
