In the first part of the presente work, the carbonyl stretching vibration of some ω-ethylthio-p-substituted-acetophenones (1) - (8), bearing as p-substituents NO2 (1), CN (2), Br (3), Cl (4), H (5), Me (6), OMe (7) and NH2 (8) and of the corresponding unsubstituted acetophenones (10) - (17), in solvents of inereasing polarity (n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform), is analysed. The corresponding i.r. measurements for the ethylthioacetone (9) and for the methylethylketone (18) were also included for comparison. Further on, the ultraviolet spectra of the ω-ethylthio-p-substituted-acetophenones (1) - (7) and of the parent unsubstituted acetophenones (10) - (16), in n-hexane, are presented. Moreover, the energies os the n→π* transitions of the carbonyl group, as well as the corresponding band intensities are discussed and interpreted. Compounds (9) and (18) were included for the sake of comparison. The i.r. measurements indicate that a cis-gauche conformational equilibrium exists in all the studied ω-ethylthio-p-substituted-acetophenones (1) - (8), in all three solvents. The relative stability of the cis and gauche rotamers seems to be the same for all such compounds. In spite of electron attracting or donnating effects of substuents, there is no alteration in the relative population of the conformers, being the same as that for the ethylthioacetone (9). In all three solvents, excelent linear correlations between the gauche carbonyl stretching frequencies of the ω-ethyltio-p-substituted-acetophenones (1) – (18) and σ+p were obtained. Moreover, the carbonyl frequency shifts to lower values observed for the gauche rotamer of the ethyltio-substituted compounds (1) – (8), as compared to the parent compounds (10) – (17), clearly indicate that the carbonyl group and the benzene ring in the same plane, in the former compounds (1) – (8). The positive frequency shifts for the cis rotamer of the ω-ethylthio-acetophenones (1) – (6), as compared to the parent compounds (10) – (15), follow an increasing trend from electron attracting to electron donnating groups attached to the benzene ring. Such experimental result suggests that a field effect must be operating for the cis rotamer of the αhetrosubstituted carbonyl compounds, The positive carbonyl frequency shift of the pair ω-ethylthioacetophenone (5) (cis rotamer) – acetophenone (14) is smaller than that observed for the pair ethylthioacetone (9) (cis rotamer) – methylethylketone (18), in all three solvents and should be attributed to a smaller field effect, due to a larger dihedral angle (Φ) between the C=O and C-S bonds, in the cis rotamer of compound (5), as compared to (9), where it is close to 0°. On the other hand, the same negative carbonyl frequency shifts, in all three solvents, are observed for the pairs ω-ethylthioacetophenone (5) (gauche rotamer) – acetophenone (14) and ethylthioacetone (9) (gauche rotamer) – methylethylketone (18). In close analogy, the bathocromic shifts of the carbonyl n→π* transition obtained for the acetophenone (14) as compared to the ω-ethylthioacetophenone (5) is the same as that observed for the ethylthioacetone (9) as compared to the methylethylketone (18). This experimental result suggests that the dihedral angle (Φ’) must be smaller for the ω-ethylthioacetophenone (5) than for the ethylthioacetone (9). The enhancing negative shifts of the carbonyl frequencies for the gauche rotamers of the ω-ethylthioacetophenones (1) – (8), as compared to the parent compounds (10) – (17), in goind from electron donnating to electron attracting groups, clearly indicates an hyperconjugative interaction between πCO and σC-S orbitals. The ω-ethylthio- group in p-substituted acetophenones causes a bathocromic shift (20 nm) and an hypercromic effect (10 fold) of the n→π* transition. Such result suggests that an hyperconjugative interaction between the σ*C-S and π*CO antibonding orbitals must be operating in the excited state, causing a π*CO energy level stabilization. The progressive bathocromic of the carbonyl n→π* transition for the ω-ethylthio-p-substituted-acetophenones (1) – (7), going from electron donnating to electron attracting substituents, indicate that the progressive hyperconjugative interaction between the π*CO and σ*C-S antibonding orbitals in rather larger thant the progressive stabilization of the carbonyl nO non-bonding orbital.
