Situações específicas e fatores de stress no basquetebol de alto nível.
Keywords in Portuguese
Basquetebol
Stress competitivo

Competitive stress
Abstract in English
Stress is one of the most common psychological variables in competitive sport. It’s acting regardless of athletes performance level. Many authors refer to stress as the most determinant factor on the athletic performance. Basketball is a potentially stressful sport because it has many different personal and situational characteristics. The purpose of this research was to identify stress situations in top level basketball and label them as stress sources and factors. Took part in this study 19 Brazilian basketball players (10 male; 9 female). They had at least one participation in the last two Olympic Games and/or World Championships. A qualitative design was adopted and the athletes were invited to an interview with two basic questions: “Which are the situations directly or indirectly related to competition that can produce stress during a game?" and “Which was the most stressful situation during your athletic career?" The results showed 126 specific situations of stress and they were labeled in 10 specific stress factors and 4 general stress factors: individual competitive, situational competitive, personal extra-competitive and social extra-competitive. The situational competitive factors were the most representative with 100 situations (90,5%). “Game situations", “influence of others – coaches and teammates", “competence" and “planning and organization" were the most frequent. Regarding to the critical stress situations, 7 athletes referred to problems related to the game; 5 referred to injuries with a long time away from court; 3 referred to psychological states; 2 referred to the influence of others; 1 referred to personal problems and 1 to planning and organization. Some suggestions are made in order to develop new researches in different sports and with younger athletes.
