Abstract in English
Young people of present days live in a world saturated with information which is characterized by high rate of obsolescence and which lacks value because judgment on its pertinence is left to an inexperienced user. These features lead students into a stunned behavior generated by lack of understanding of the complementarities of the traditional usage of solving students' doubts by the professor using chalk and blackboard and the apparently fast results of an uncomment, unvalued Internet world. The student who is living in the present mobile phone, cable TV, Internet world, on entering the classroom often feels like returning to the XIX century, which causes enormous frustration. This gives rise to the following questions, which I hope this study will help to clarify: - What to do to attract the best students? - What to do to keep them motivated and productive? - What to do to increase the performance of the teaching/learning process of the courses of an engineering program? This study presents and discusses a new pedagogic appreciation of the engineering programs and their courses obtained by the author through his experience as a professor of the Departamento de Engenharia de Energia e Automação Elétricas da Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo. This study also presents a proposal of a method to establish and follow-up the performance of the different courses of an engineering program. The first step for this purpose is sketching an outline of thestructure of engineering programs in the world and in Brasil, as well as of the pertinent local regulations on the curricula structures and professional attributions. ) The second is an evaluation of the present performance of the Brazilian electrical engineering programs based on an analysis of the results of "Exame Nacional de Cursos, Provão", (meaning "National Courses Evaluation, Big Test") which has been applied in years 1998 through 2003 and of "ENADE - Exame Nacional de Desempenho",(meaning "National Performance Evaluation"), which has been used in place of Provão since 2004.
